Archival Overview

Master Guinean modern drum-kit percussionist and bandleader who backed Miriam Makeba and Les Ambassadeurs.

Biographical Record

Papa Kouyaté was an exceptionally gifted Guinean drummer and percussionist who revolutionized modern West African rhythm sections by adapting traditional polyrhythms to the Western trap drum kit.

Coming from a celebrated griot lineage in Kankan, Kouyaté served as the longtime bandleader and musical director for Miriam Makeba during her exile in Guinea, touring the world's most prestigious concert halls.

He later led his own celebrated group 'Les Pela Girls', mentoring dozens of young West African percussionists and defining afro-pop percussion arrangements.
