Archival Overview
Pioneering Georgian Romantic poet known as the 'Georgian Byron', author of 'Fate of Georgia' and 'Merani'.
Biographical Record
Prince Nikoloz Baratashvili was the foremost representative of Georgian Romanticism, whose brief life produced some of the most emotionally intense and philosophical verses in Georgian literature.
Despite living in penury and dying of malaria at just twenty-seven in Ganja, Baratashvili composed works of staggering poetic beauty, notably 'Merani' (The Flying Steed), an allegorical anthem of defiance against fate, and the historical poem 'Fate of Georgia'.
His poetic vision introduced modern existential questioning and psychological depth to Caucasian literature, influencing all subsequent generations of Georgian writers.
