Archival Overview
World-renowned Georgian primitivist painter whose portraits, animal depictions, and tavern scenes achieved global acclaim.
Biographical Record
Niko Pirosmani (Nikoloz Pirosmanashvili) was a self-taught Georgian painter who produced hundreds of deeply expressive oil paintings on black oilcloth, capturing the everyday soul of Georgia.
Living a life of extreme poverty in Tbilisi, Pirosmani painted shop signs, banquet scenes, peasants, and wild animals in exchange for food and modest lodgings in local taverns (dukhans).
Discovered by avant-garde artists shortly before his death, Pirosmani's naive mastery influenced Pablo Picasso, Kazimir Malevich, and modern European expressionism, earning him posthumous status as Georgia's most iconic visual artist.
