Archival Overview

Osu Alata Mantse and businessman who organized the historic 1948 Gold Coast boycott of European imported goods, sparking the independence struggle.

Biographical Record

Nii Kwabena Bonne III (born Theodore Taylor) was a traditional chief, wealthy merchant, and fearless political agitator who catalyzed Ghana's modern independence movement.

In January 1948, outraged by exorbitant consumer price inflation imposed by European trading monopolies (the Association of West African Merchants), Bonne organized a nationwide consumer boycott across the Gold Coast.

The boycott culminated in the historic February 1948 protests and Christiansborg Crossroads shooting, directly triggering the political chain of events that led to Ghana's independence in 1957.
