Archival Overview
Courageous Sultan of the Daju people of Dar Sila who maintained sovereign independence in eastern Chad for sixteen years until falling in combat in 1916 defending his fortress at Goz Beïda.
Biographical Record
Sultan Muhammad Bakhit was the sovereign ruler of Dar Sila, the historic realm of the Daju people centered at Goz Beïda in southeastern Chad. A leader of immense spiritual prestige and military determination, Bakhit governed a vital commercial crossroads between Wadai and Darfur.
Refusing to submit to French imperial protectorate treaties, Sultan Bakhit fortified the granite hills around Goz Beïda. In 1916, when French colonial columns launched an offensive to annex Dar Sila during World War I, Bakhit commanded his cavalry in a desperate last stand. He was killed in the defense of his capital, honored to this day by the Daju as an immortal national martyr.
