Archival Overview
Celebrated early medieval chronicler known as the 'Father of Armenian History', whose monumental 'History of Armenia' preserved ancient national legends and genealogical origins.
Biographical Record
Movses Khorenatsi was born circa 410 in the historical region of Taron. A distinguished disciple of Mesrop Mashtots and Sahak Partev, he was sent to Alexandria, Athens, and Rome to master classical rhetoric, philosophy, and Greek literature before returning to serve the Armenian Church.
Commissioned by Prince Sahak Bagratuni, Khorenatsi authored the landmark Patmut'yun Hayots (History of Armenia). It represented the first comprehensive historiographical chronicle tracing Armenia from mythical origins—such as the epic duel of Hayk and Bel—down to the fall of the Arsacid dynasty in the 5th century. His work earned him the enduring title of Patmahayr ('Father of History').
