Archival Overview
Heroic Eritrean patriot who alongside Abreha Deboch executed the daring February 19, 1937 hand-grenade attack on Italian Viceroy Rodolfo Graziani, fighting to the death in the mountains of Selale.
Biographical Record
Mogus Asgedom was born circa 1912 in the highland plateau of Eritrea. Working as a clerk in the Italian municipal administration in Addis Ababa, Mogus was appalled by the brutality of Italian fascist occupation across the Horn of Africa.
Conspiring with fellow patriot Abreha Deboch, Mogus smuggled grenades into the Genete Leul Palace ceremony on February 19, 1937, hurling them directly at Viceroy Graziani and General Liotta. Breaking through fascist cordons, Mogus and Abreha fled north toward the monastery of Debre Libanos before dying in battle against pursuing colonial cavalry, remembered forever as titans of anti-fascist courage.
