Archival Overview
Visionary Afghan tribal leader affectionately known as Mirwais Neka (Mirwais the Grandfather) who liberated Kandahar from Safavid Persian rule in 1709, founding the Hotak dynasty.
Biographical Record
Mirwais Khan Hotak was born in 1673 in Kandahar into the prominent Hotak clan of the Ghilji Pashtuns. Serving as mayor of Kandahar under the oppressive Safavid Georgian governor Gurgin Khan, Mirwais recognized the necessity of liberating his people from foreign religious and political persecution.
After undertaking a pilgrimage to Mecca in 1708, where he obtained a legal fatwa authorizing armed uprising against Safavid oppression, Mirwais organized a covert rebellion. In 1709, he overthrew and executed Gurgin Khan in a daring night ambush, repelling multiple imperial Persian punitive armies and establishing Kandahar as an independent sovereign Afghan state until his peaceful death in 1715.
