Archival Overview
Colossal figure of 20th-century Croatian literature and European modernist theater, author of 'The Glembays', 'The Return of Philip Latinowicz', and 'The Ballads of Petrica Kerempuh'.
Biographical Record
Miroslav Krleža was born in Zagreb on July 7, 1893. Attending military academies in Pécs and Budapest, Krleža broke with Austro-Hungarian militarism, throwing himself into anti-war expressionist poetry and theater.
His dramatic cycle Gospoda Glembajevi (The Glembays) provided an incisive autopsy of central European bourgeois decay, while his 1936 masterpiece Balade Petrice Kerempuha resurrected Kajkavian linguistic genius to depict centuries of peasant oppression. Founding the Yugoslav Lexicographical Institute in 1950, Krleža towered over Croatian intellectual life for sixty years.
