Archival Overview
Foremost 20th-century Afghan historian, social democrat, and parliamentarian who authored Afghanistan dar Masir-i Tarikh, the definitive critical history of the Afghan people.
Biographical Record
Mir Ghulam Mohammad Ghobar was born in 1898 in Kabul. A leading intellectual of the constitutionalist movement, he served in diplomatic missions in Paris and Berlin before founding the progressive Hizb-i Watan (Homeland Party) and the newspaper Watan in 1950, advocating social democracy and freedom of the press.
Elected to Parliament, Ghobar suffered long periods of political imprisonment under the royal regime. While incarcerated, he compiled his magnum opus, Afghanistan dar Masir-i Tarikh (Afghanistan in the Course of History), analyzing Afghan history not as royal genealogies, but through socio-economic struggles, tribal rebellions, and popular movements against foreign imperialism and domestic tyranny.
