Archival Overview

Celebrated Greek actress, anti-junta resistance leader, and Minister of Culture who campaigned for the return of the Parthenon Marbles.

Biographical Record

Melina Mercouri (born Maria Amalia Mercouri) was an internationally acclaimed actress and passionate statesman who served as Greece's longest-serving Minister of Culture.

Starring in classic films including 'Stella' and 'Never on Sunday' (earning Best Actress at Cannes), Mercouri used her international fame to oppose the Greek military junta (1967–1974), which stripped her of her Greek citizenship.

As Minister of Culture, she conceived the European Capital of Culture initiative and launched the global campaign for the repatriation of the Parthenon Marbles from the British Museum.
