Archival Overview
Revolutionary leader and Prime Minister of Grenada from 1979 to 1983 who led the People's Revolutionary Government.
Biographical Record
Maurice Rupert Bishop was a charismatic Grenadian lawyer and socialist leader who served as Prime Minister of the People's Revolutionary Government (PRG) following the March 1979 revolution.
Educated in law at Gray's Inn in London, Bishop co-founded the New Jewel Movement, opposing the autocratic regime of Eric Gairy. Under his administration, Grenada achieved massive gains in literacy, public healthcare, women's rights, and infrastructure, notably the construction of Point Salines International Airport (now Maurice Bishop International Airport).
In October 1983, a military coup led by hardline factional rivals resulted in his tragic execution at Fort Rupert, leading directly to the US-led military intervention.
