Prominent Haitian poet, dramatist, diplomat, and political martyr executed under the Nord Alexis dictatorship.
Biographical Record
Massillon Coicou was one of Haiti's foremost 19th-century dramatic poets and patriotic intellectuals, renowned for his stirring theatrical verse commemorating the heroes of independence.
Serving as a diplomat in Paris, Coicou published acclaimed works including 'Poésies nationales' and staged historical dramas celebrating Toussaint Louverture and Jean-Jacques Dessalines at the Théâtre de la Gaîté.
In March 1908, after plotting to overthrow the authoritarian regime of President Pierre Nord Alexis, Coicou and his two brothers were summarily executed by firing squad against the outer wall of the Port-au-Prince cemetery.
