Biographical Record

Martin Wylde Carter is widely celebrated as Guyana's national poet and one of the Caribbean's most profound and powerful lyrical voices.

Imprisoned without charge by British colonial authorities in 1953 during the suspension of the constitution, Carter composed his iconic collection 'Poems of Resistance from British Guiana', including 'I Come from the Nigger Yard' and 'This Is the Dark Time My Love'.
