"Exile cannot silence a voice that carries the sacred fire of its native earth."

Archival Overview

Revered Haitian singer, composer, and activist who spent decades in Cuban exile singing anthems of anti-dictatorship struggle.

Biographical Record

Martha Jean-Claude was a legendary singer, folklorist, and courageous political dissident known affectionately as the 'Daughter of the Two Islands' (Haiti and Cuba).

Imprisoned in 1952 by the Paul Magloire regime while six months pregnant for publishing patriotic texts, she escaped into exile in Cuba. In Havana, she became a beloved star, performing Haitian folk songs and fiery anti-Duvalier resistance anthems on international stages.

Her triumphant return to Port-au-Prince in 1986 following the collapse of the Duvalier dictatorship was greeted by hundreds of thousands of weeping citizens celebrating freedom.
