Archival Overview

Patriarch of Rebetiko music, singer, and bouzouki composer who created the classic Piraeus style and wrote 'Frangosyriani'.

Biographical Record

Markos Vamvakaris was the foundational figure and 'Patriarch' of authentic Greek Rebetiko, originating the distinctive Piraeus bouzouki and baglamas quartet style.

Born on the Cycladic island of Syros, Vamvakaris moved to the slums of Piraeus, working as a dock laborer and slaughterhouse skinner while composing rough-hewn, emotionally devastating songs of underworld life, poverty, and hashish dens.

His 1935 composition 'Frangosyriani' (The Catholic Girl of Syros) became one of the most beloved and universally recognized Greek songs of all time.
