Leading Angolan poet, sociologist, and essayist whose exquisite, nostalgic verses in Poesias and 100 Poemas captured the intimate soul, music, and neighborhoods of old Luanda.
Biographical Record
Mário António Fernandes de Oliveira was born on April 5, 1934, in Maquela do Zombo, Uíge province, and raised in the historic São Paulo quarter of Luanda. Moving to Lisbon in the 1960s, he earned a doctorate in social sciences and taught African literature at the New University of Lisbon.
Mário António's poetry avoided overt political slogans, choosing instead an intimate, delicate lyrical tone that celebrated the sounds, scents, and everyday humanity of Luanda's musseques. His master collections include Poesias (1956), Chingo (1958), and 100 Poemas (1963). As an academic sociologist, his monumental studies on 19th-century Luandan society remain essential references for African social history.
