Archival Overview
Master Haitian novelist whose banned 1968 trilogy 'Amour, Colère et Folie' exposed the terror of the Duvalier dictatorship.
Biographical Record
Marie Chauvet (born Marie Vieux) was one of the most daring and brilliant novelists in Caribbean feminist literature, celebrated for her ruthless psychological realism and political bravery.
In 1968, Gallimard published in Paris her explosive trilogy 'Amour, Colère et Folie' (Love, Anger, Madness), providing a terrifying, unsparing depiction of state terrorism, militia torture, and social decay under the Tonton Macoutes.
To protect her family from immediate retribution by François Duvalier, the edition was rapidly bought back and withdrawn from circulation, forcing Chauvet into permanent exile in New York City.
