"Words are small knives; in marriage and daily life, they can cut down to the living bone."

Archival Overview

Pioneering master of modern psychological drama and razor-sharp dialogue whose plays 'The Golden Calf' (Kultainen vasikka) and novel 'Huojuva talo' (Tottering House) dissected marriage, money, and power.

Biographical Record

Maria Gustava Haggrén was born in Kuopio on April 9, 1880. Studying literature and history at the University of Helsinki, Jotuni revolutionized Finnish theater with her spare, incisive, unsentimental conversational style.

Her 1918 comedy Kultainen vasikka satirized wartime war profiteering and greed, while her posthumously published novel Huojuva talo provided a harrowing, clinically brilliant dissection of domestic psychological abuse. Her short story collections established her as one of Scandinavia's greatest 20th-century feminist stylists.
