Archival Overview

Guatemalan schoolteacher and national martyr of the 1944 Revolution whose death brought down the Jorge Ubico dictatorship.

Biographical Record

María Chinchilla Recinos was a courageous public schoolteacher whose martyrdom ignited the popular uprising that overthrew dictator Jorge Ubico.

On June 25, 1944, Chinchilla joined thousands of fellow educators and women dressed in black protesting peacefully in Guatemala City demanding salary justice and an end to police repression.

When cavalry and police fired into the unarmed crowd, Chinchilla was shot dead; her death triggered a nationwide general strike forcing Ubico's resignation, and June 25 was officially designated Guatemala's National Teacher's Day in her honor.
