"Three realms under one peaceful crown, united by law, wisdom, and the common good of our people."

Archival Overview

Formidable medieval sovereign and diplomatic genius who united the three Nordic kingdoms of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden under a single crown in the 1397 Kalmar Union, ruling Scandinavia with majestic peace.

Biographical Record

Margrete Valdemarsdatter was born in 1353, the youngest daughter of King Valdemar IV Atterdag. Married at age ten to King Haakon VI of Norway, Margrete demonstrated peerless political intelligence following the deaths of her father, husband, and son King Olav.

Outmaneuvering regional nobility and the Hanseatic League, she brought Sweden into her realm, culminating in the historic coronation of her grandnephew Eric of Pomerania at Kalmar in 1397. Ruling as effective regent of all Scandinavia for twenty-five years, she secured borders and financial prosperity until her death in 1412.
