Biographical Record
Manto Mavrogenous was an aristocratic, multilingual Greek patriot from Mykonos who spent her entire ancestral fortune equipping warships and provisioning soldiers during the 1821 Revolution.
Personally leading the defence of Mykonos against Ottoman naval raids in 1822, she also penned passionate open letters to the women of France and England, galvanizing international humanitarian and political solidarity.
Despite dying in poverty on Paros after sacrificing all her assets to the new state, she is revered as an immortal exemplar of female patriotism and civic devotion.
