Biographical Record
Mehmedalija 'Mak' Dizdar was born on October 17, 1917, in Stolac, near the famous Radimlja necropolis of medieval tombstones (stećci). Moving to Sarajevo, he worked as a journalist, publisher, and President of the Writers' Union of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
In 1966, Dizdar published Kameni spavač (Stone Sleeper), universally hailed as the most profound poetic monument of modern Bosnian literature. Channelling the archaic inscriptions carved on medieval Bogomil tombstones, Dizdar explored themes of life, death, cosmic mystery, and Bosnia's perpetual struggle between East and West. His iconic poem 'Zapis o zemlji' ('Record of the Land') remains an immortal declaration of Bosnian resilience.
