Greatest Mai (Emperor) of the Kanem-Bornu Empire who ruled Chad and northeastern Nigeria for three decades, introducing Turkish muskets and camel cavalry, recorded by chronicler Ahmad Fartua.
Biographical Record
Mai Idris Alooma ascended the throne of the Kanem-Bornu Empire circa 1571. A sovereign of exceptional military genius and administrative vision, Alooma transformed Kanem-Bornu into the dominant power of the central Sahara and Lake Chad basin.
Alooma was among the first sub-Saharan monarchs to introduce firearms, acquiring Ottoman Turkish matchlocks and Turkish military advisers to train a professional corps of musketeers. Chronicled by his court grand imam Ahmad Ibn Fartua in The Book of the Kanem Wars, Alooma constructed brick mosques, codified Islamic legal courts, and established safe pilgrim routes across the Sahara to Mecca.
