Archival Overview
Leading symbolist painter of the Golden Age whose ascetic, melancholic early canvases ('The Awakening') and monumental fresco 'The Resurrection' in Tampere Cathedral made him a titan of Nordic visual modernism.
Biographical Record
Knut Magnus Enckell was born on November 9, 1870, in Hamina. Studying at the Académie Julian in Paris under the influence of Pierre Puvis de Chavannes and Joséphin Péladan, Enckell became the paramount leader of Finnish symbolism.
His early drawings and paintings of ascetic, introspective adolescent figures in subtle ochres and grays captured youth on the threshold of life. In 1906–1907, he created the monumental 10-meter fresco The Resurrection in the choir of Tampere Cathedral. Founding the post-impressionist Septem group in 1912, he introduced French pure color theory to Finland.
