Biographical Record
Lyuben Karavelov was born in the historic mountain town of Koprivshtitsa in 1834. Studying philology and history at Moscow State University, Karavelov was deeply influenced by Russian revolutionary democrats Herzen and Chernyshevsky before settling in Bucharest in 1869.
As head of the BRCC, Karavelov formed an indomitable partnership with Vasil Levski and Hristo Botev, publishing the revolutionary periodicals Svoboda (Freedom) and Nezavisimost (Independence). His novella Bulgarians of Old Times (Bulgari ot staro vreme, 1867) remains a humorous and poignant classic of national revival literature. He lived to witness Bulgaria's liberation in 1878 before succumbing to tuberculosis in Ruse.
