Archival Overview
Beloved 'Nightingale of the Emajõgi' and greatest national poet of Estonia whose immortal lyric 'Mu isamaa on minu arm' became the sacred unofficial anthem of Estonian resistance against foreign occupation.
Biographical Record
Lydia Emilie Florentine Jannsen was born on Christmas Eve 1843 in Vändra, the daughter of publisher Johann Voldemar Jannsen. Writing under the pen name Lydia Koidula ('Lydia of the Dawn', bestowed by Carl Robert Jakobson), she became the fiery poetic voice of the 1860s National Awakening.
Her 1867 poetry collection Emajõe ööbik (The Nightingale of the Emajõgi) and her play Saaremaa onupoeg (1870) founded Estonian national theater. Her poem Mu isamaa on minu arm (My Fatherland Is My Love), set to music by Gustav Ernesaks, brought millions of Estonians to tears during the Soviet-era Song Festivals, igniting the Singing Revolution.
