Archival Overview

Pioneering linguist, politician, and newspaper editor who sparked the Croatian National Revival (Illyrian Movement) and standardized the Croatian Latin alphabet with diacritics (č, ć, ž, š, đ).

Biographical Record

Ljudevit Gaj was born on July 8, 1809, in Krapina. In 1830 in Pest, he published the revolutionary linguistic treatise Kratka osnova horvatsko-slavenskoga pravopisanja, designing the modern Croatian Latin script with Czech-style diacritics.

Founding the historic newspaper Novine Horvatske and its cultural supplement Danica in 1835, Gaj unified Croatian literacy around the Shtokavian dialect. His national anthem Još Horvatska ni propala energized the 1848 generation, awakening South Slavic cultural and political consciousness.
