Foundational founding father and first President of the Gabonese Republic (1960–1967) who established the modern civil institutions of Gabon and governed through the critical transition to sovereign independence.
Biographical Record
Léon M'ba Minko was born on February 9, 1902, in Libreville into a Fang family. Working as a colonial clerk and traditional magistrate, M'ba published studies on Fang customary law, suffering years of colonial exile to Oubangui-Chari (Central African Republic) for his nationalist activism.
Returning to Gabon in 1946, he founded the Bloc Démocratique Gabonais (BDG) and was elected the first African Mayor of Libreville in 1956. Upon Gabon's independence on August 17, 1960, M'ba became the inaugural President. Surviving the 1964 military coup through French treaty intervention, he governed until his death in 1967; the monumental Léon M'ba Mausoleum honors his legacy in Libreville.
