Archival Overview
Visionary and eccentric avant-garde poet of Colombian-Swedish ancestry whose baroque, musical verse, inventive neologisms, and alter egos (Leo Legris, Erik Fjordson) made him an unclassifiable literary titan.
Biographical Record
León de Greiff was born on September 26, 1895, in Medellín, the grandson of Swedish engineer Karl Sigismund Fromholt von Greiff. In 1915, he co-founded the rebellious literary movement Los Panidas in Medellín with artist Pedro Nel Gómez, scandalizing conservative society with modernist aesthetic freedom.
De Greiff created a singular, astonishing poetic universe that fused musical polyphony, medieval troubadour balladry, chess metaphors, and ironic humor in collections like Tergiversaciones and Variaciones alrededor de nada. Serving as Director of the National Department of Statistics and Ambassador to Sweden, he was revered by younger generations as a supreme master of verbal music.
