"My bronze breathes with the fire of the Fang forge; our ancient ancestors guide every curve of my chisel."

Archival Overview

Internationally renowned sculptor and ceramist hailed as 'The Black Picasso' by Pablo Picasso himself, whose bronze and wood masterpieces synthesized Fang ancestral reliquaries with modernist avant-garde sculpture.

Biographical Record

Leandro Mbomio Nsue was born on January 5, 1938, in Evinayong. Moving to Spain to study at the Escuela de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid, Mbomio formed close friendships with Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró, and André Malraux.

Picasso famously nicknamed him 'El Picasso Negro' in admiration of his bold, dynamic bronze and ebony sculptures inspired by ancestral Fang byeri reliquary figures. Serving as Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism and President of the Council for Scientific Research (CICTE), he was named UNESCO Artist for Peace in 2007.
