Archival Overview
Heroine of the War of 1812 who walked thirty-two kilometers through swamps to warn British and Indigenous forces of an impending American attack.
Biographical Record
Laura Ingersoll Secord was born in Massachusetts and moved to Queenston, Upper Canada, with her Loyalist family, marrying merchant James Secord. During the War of 1812, American officers billeted in her home; in June 1813, she overheard them discussing plans to launch a surprise attack on the British outpost at Beaver Dams.
With her husband disabled from battle wounds, Laura set out on foot before dawn on June 22, 1813, walking thirty-two kilometers through uncharted woods and rattlesnake-infested Black Swamp to deliver the warning to Lieutenant James FitzGibbon and Mohawk warriors. Her courage enabled the allied forces to ambush and capture five hundred American soldiers at the Battle of Beaver Dams.
