Biographical Record
Lauri 'Lassi' Nummi was born in Helsinki on October 9, 1928. Publishing his debut collections in 1949, Nummi became a central pillar of the 1950s Finnish modernist poetic breakthrough.
His poetic collections—especially Maisema (Landscape), Taivaan ja maan merkit, and Hengitys yössä—combined Nordic nature contemplation with Taoist and Buddhist tranquility. From 1973 to 1992, he chaired the official committee that translated the modern Finnish Bible, leaving an indelible imprint on the linguistic rhythm of contemporary Finnish.
