Archival Overview
Master 20th-century Albanian lyric poet celebrated for musical, hermetic verse collections Vallja e yjve (Dance of the Stars) and Ylli i zemrës, capturing the mystical tranquility of Lake Ohrid.
Biographical Record
Lazar Sotir Gusho, writing under the poetic pen name Lasgush Poradeci, was born on December 27, 1899, in Pogradec on the shores of Lake Ohrid. He studied art and romance philology in Bucharest and earned a doctorate from the University of Graz in 1933 with a thesis on Mihai Eminescu.
Poradeci was an exquisite musical craftsman who introduced symbolist musicality, neoclassical balance, and metaphysical reflection to modern Albanian verse. His collections Vallja e yjve (Dance of the Stars, 1933) and Ylli i zemrës (Star of the Heart, 1937) are regarded as supreme pinnacles of Albanian lyricism. During the communist regime, he refused to write socialist realist propaganda, living in dignified, reclusive poverty in Pogradec, translating Pushkin, Lermontov, and Goethe.
