Archival Overview
Foremost master of Finnish National Romantic architecture whose granite landmarks, including Tampere Cathedral, Kallio Church, and Jean Sibelius's home Ainola, embodied the mythic power of Finnish stone and timber.
Biographical Record
Lars Eliel Sonck was born in Kälviä on August 10, 1870. Graduating from the Helsinki Polytechnic Institute at age twenty-four after already winning the competition for Saint Michael's Church in Turku, Sonck was a fiery leader of National Romanticism.
Rejecting classical European imitation, Sonck utilized native rough-hewn grey granite, copper roofs, and medieval Finnish stone traditions to build Tampere Cathedral (1902–1907) and Kallio Church in Helsinki. In 1904, he designed Ainola for Jean Sibelius on Lake Tuusula, creating an organic temple of Scandinavian timber.
