Archival Overview

Foremost Greek poet of the New Athenian School, Nobel nominee, and lyricist of the Olympic Hymn.

Biographical Record

Kostis Palamas was the central titan of Greek literature for half a century, whose poetic works catalyzed the triumph of the demotic language in Greek letters.

Author of monumental poetic collections such as 'The Twelve Lays of the Gypsy' and 'The King's Flute', Palamas also penned the lyrics for the Olympic Hymn, premiered at the 1896 Athens Olympic Games.

His massive state funeral in Nazi-occupied Athens in 1943 transformed into the largest public demonstration of patriotic resistance against German occupation, as hundreds of thousands chanted his verses.
