Biographical Record

Kofi Awoonor (born George Kofi Awoonor-Williams) was one of West Africa's most prominent poets and literary scholars, renowned for translating traditional Ewe oral dirges into modern English verse.

Author of celebrated collections including 'Rediscovery and Other Poems' and the allegorical novel 'This Earth, My Brother', Awoonor combined poignant lyricism with rigorous political engagement.

He served as Ghana's Ambassador to Brazil, Cuba, and the United Nations, and chaired the Council of State before his tragic death during the Westgate shopping mall terrorist attack in Nairobi in 2013.
