Archival Overview
Mighty 12th-century emperor of the Khmer Empire who unified the kingdom and constructed the peerless architectural wonder Angkor Wat, the largest religious monument in human history.
Biographical Record
Suryavarman II ('Shield of the Sun') was born circa 1095. After defeating rival claimants in fierce dynastic combat, he united the Khmer realm under his divine rule in 1113, launching major military expeditions eastward against Dai Viet and the Champa kingdom.
A devout devotee of Vishnu, Suryavarman II conceived and built Angkor Wat, a colossal stone cosmic model of Mount Meru covering over 400 acres, featuring extensive bas-relief carvings illustrating Hindu epics such as the Churning of the Ocean of Milk and his own imperial triumphs. Under his reign, classical Khmer civilization reached its zenith of mathematical harmony and monumentality.
