Archival Overview
Beloved King of Cambodia who recovered the historic Angkor provinces of Siem Reap and Battambang from Siam in 1907 and dazzled Europe with the Royal Cambodian Ballet at the 1906 Colonial Exhibition.
Biographical Record
Sisowath was born on September 7, 1840, in Mongkol Borey, half-brother to King Norodom. Ascending the throne in 1904, Sisowath was a charismatic, modernizing ruler who worked cooperatively with French administrators to build modern roads, bridges, and schools across the protectorate.
His greatest national triumph occurred in 1907, when French diplomatic pressure compelled the Kingdom of Siam to retrocede the northwestern provinces of Battambang, Sisophon, and Siem Reap—returning the ancestral ruins of Angkor to Cambodia. In 1906, his state visit to France with the Royal Cambodian Ballet captivated Paris and sculptor Auguste Rodin. The historic Lycée Sisowath in Phnom Penh honors his name.
