Archival Overview
Legendary 19th-century King of the Bubi people who unified the clans of Bioko Island into a centralized spiritual confederation, established the Botuku warrior council, and preserved indigenous autonomy.
Biographical Record
King Moka was born circa 1820 on Bioko Island. Elevated to the supreme royal and priestly office of the Bubi people around 1875, Moka made the elevated highland sanctuary of Moka the political and spiritual capital of the island.
Moka created the disciplined military unit known as the Lobo, ending inter-clan warfare and strictly regulating all European missionary and merchant access to the interior. Revered as an incarnation of the supreme deity Ruche, Moka lived in seclusion, ruling through trusted emissaries and ensuring peace across Bioko until his death in 1899.
