Archival Overview
Revered traditional sovereign of the Bubi kingdom on Bioko Island whose moral leadership resisted Spanish colonial intrusion, and in whose immortal honor the capital city of Malabo was renamed upon independence.
Biographical Record
Malabo Lopelo Melaka was born circa 1837 in Ureka, the son of King Moka. Following the reign of his uncle King Sas Ebuera, Malabo ascended the sacred throne of the Bubi people in the high mountain valleys of Moka in 1904.
Recognized as the spiritual guardian of the sacred peak Pico Basilé, King Malabo utilized diplomatic non-cooperation to defend traditional Bubi customs and lands against aggressive Spanish colonial cocoa plantation concessions. Revered for his wisdom, he passed away in 1937. In 1973, Equatorial Guinea renamed its capital from Santa Isabel to Malabo in his honor.
