Archival Overview
Greatest builder-king of the Pagan Empire who unified Burman and Mon cultures in multi-ethnic harmony, preserved through famous Mon stone inscriptions and the architectural wonder of Ananda Temple.
Biographical Record
Kyansittha ('The Remaining Soldier') was born circa 1030, rising as Anawrahta's most brilliant cavalry general. Succeeding Sawlu in 1084 after suppressing a dangerous Mon rebellion, Kyansittha pursued an enlightened policy of ethnic reconciliation between the Burman rulers and Mon scholars.
His stone inscriptions in the Mon language at Myazedi and the Shwezigon proclaim his compassionate royal ideal: 'With wisdom and loving kindness, I shall wipe away the tears of my people.' In 1091, he completed the Ananda Temple, renowned as the architectural masterpiece of Bagan. He also sent royal missions to restore the Mahabodhi Temple in Bodh Gaya, India.
