Archival Overview
Greatest monarch of the Khmer Empire who liberated Angkor from Cham occupation, constructed the walled capital of Angkor Thom, the enigmatic face-towers of the Bayon, and over 100 royal hospitals.
Biographical Record
Jayavarman VII was born circa 1125, the son of King Dharanindravarman II. Following the devastating Cham sack of Angkor in 1177, Jayavarman mobilized Khmer resistance, defeating Cham fleets in an epic naval battle on the Tonle Sap lake and being crowned supreme monarch in 1181.
Devoutly practicing Mahayana Buddhism, Jayavarman launched the most astonishing building program in Asian history: constructing the fortified city of Angkor Thom, the temple-mountain of the Bayon (featuring 216 giant stone faces radiating serene Buddhist compassion), Ta Prohm, Preah Khan, and Banteay Chhmar. He built 102 stone hospitals and rest-houses across his empire, with inscriptions recording: 'The bodily disease of his subjects became in him a mental hurt.'
