Archival Overview
Visionary nineteenth-century writer and educator who established modern vernacular Armenian literature through his patriotic novel 'Verk Hayastani' ('Wounds of Armenia').
Biographical Record
Khachatur Abovian was born on October 15, 1809, in Kanaker near Yerevan. Educated at the Gevorkian Seminary and later at the University of Dorpat (Tartu) in Estonia, Abovian was a polyglot humanist who accompanied German explorer Friedrich Parrot on the historic first recorded ascent of Mount Ararat in 1829.
Breaking decisively with the archaic Classical Armenian (Grabar), Abovian wrote Verk Hayastani (1841) in the living Eastern Armenian vernacular, narrating the liberation of Eastern Armenia from Persian rule. On the morning of April 14, 1848, he walked out of his home in Yerevan and vanished without a trace, leaving behind a foundational modern literary legacy.
