Archival Overview
Brilliant Parnassian and decadent modernist poet whose exquisite collections 'Hojas al viento', 'Nieve', and 'Bustos y rimas' introduced French aestheticism and sonic precision to Spanish-language verse.
Biographical Record
Julián del Casal was born in Havana on November 7, 1863. Rejecting legal studies, Casal devoted his fragile life to poetry and aesthetic journalism, corresponding with Rubén Darío and Joris-Karl Huysmans.
Surrounding himself with Japanese tapestries, perfumes, and ivory artifacts in Havana, Casal published Nieve (1892), achieving unparalleled perfection in the Parnassian sonnet. On October 21, 1893, while dining with friends, a guest told an uproarious joke; Casal suffered an uncontrollable fit of laughter that ruptured an aortic aneurysm, killing him instantly at age twenty-nine.
