Biographical Record
Johannes Brofeldt, writing under the Finnish name Juhani Aho, was born on September 11, 1861, in Lapinlahti, the son of a prominent Lutheran clergyman. Studying in Helsinki and absorbing Parisian naturalism, Aho was the central figure of the Nuori Suomi (Young Finland) cultural circle.
His 1884 novel Rautatie, depicting an elderly backcountry couple encountering a steam locomotive for the first time, charmed the nation with warm irony. His tragic novel Juha was adapted into classic operas and films, and his short impressionist sketches (Lastuja) established modern Finnish literary idiom.
