Legendary Bishop of Đakovo, humanist, and liberal church leader who founded the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts, rebuilt the University of Zagreb, and erected the magnificent Đakovo Cathedral.
Biographical Record
Josip Juraj Strossmayer was born in Osijek on February 4, 1815. Consecrated Bishop of Bosnia and Srijem (residing in Đakovo) in 1850, Strossmayer used his vast ecclesiastical revenues for the cultural renaissance of his homeland.
He financed the founding of the Yugoslav (now Croatian) Academy of Sciences and Arts in 1866, the re-establishment of the University of Zagreb in 1874, and the construction of Đakovo's neo-Romanesque Cathedral. At the First Vatican Council (1869–1870), his fiery speeches defending collegiality and opposing papal infallibility earned international renown.
