Archival Overview
Celebrated novelist and journalist whose supreme masterpiece 'Radetzkymarsch' (1932) captured the elegiac, multi-ethnic twilight and downfall of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy.
Biographical Record
Joseph Roth was born on September 2, 1894, in Brody near Lemberg (Lviv) on the eastern borderlands of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Studying in Vienna and serving in the Austro-Hungarian army during World War I, Roth became the star feuilleton journalist for the Frankfurter Zeitung, reporting from across Europe with unmatched stylistic brilliance.
His 1932 masterwork, Radetzkymarsch, tracing three generations of the von Trotta family in service to Emperor Franz Joseph I, stands as the definitive elegiac novel of the vanishing Habsburg world. A staunch anti-Nazi, he fled to Paris on the day Hitler took power in 1933, dying in tragic exile in 1939.
