Archival Overview

Patriarch of 19th-century Czech national painting who celebrated traditional rural costumes and created the iconic twelve-month calendar medallion dial for the Prague Old Town Astronomical Clock (Orloj).

Biographical Record

Josef Mánes was born on May 12, 1820, in Prague into an illustrious family of painters. Studying at the Prague and Munich art academies, Mánes turned away from foreign historicism to discover the living beauty of Bohemian, Moravian, and Slovak folklore.

Traveling extensively through rural villages, he produced breathtaking studies of regional peasant costumes and ceremonies. In 1865–1866, he painted the celebrated round calendar dial of the medieval Astronomical Clock on Prague's Old Town Hall, depicting rural agricultural labors for each month of the year.
