Archival Overview

Biographical Record

Johann Voldemar Jannsen was born on May 16, 1819, in Vändra. Working as a parish clerk and teacher, Jannsen established Perno Postimees in 1857, famously addressing his readers not as lowly peasants (maarahvas) but for the first time as 'Eesti rahvas' (Estonian nation).

Moving to Tartu to edit Eesti Postimees, Jannsen founded the Vanemuine cultural society and organized the very first Estonian National Song Festival (Laulupidu) in Tartu in 1869, which gathered 800 singers and 15,000 spectators. He wrote the lyrics for Mu isamaa, mu õnn ja rõõm, adopted as Estonia's official national anthem in 1920.
